Who’s Downtown Q&A with SciTech’s Ian McCleary

Q: What is your title?

A: Specialty Programs Manager

Q: What is your job description and/or day-to-day duties?

A: As the Specialty Programs Manager for SciTech, I have the privilege
to do a little bit of everything when it comes to programming. My main
programs I oversee are the museum’s Scout Programs for both Girl Scouts
and Cub Scouts, our monthly free children’s day known as Super SciTech
Saturday that is held the last Saturday of every month, SciTech’s new
Early Childhood programming, and SciTech’s summer camps!
I also get to help with planning and running some of the museum’s
fundraising events as well.

Q: How long have you been in this role?

A: This is my first year as SciTech’s Specialty Programs Manager. Prior
to this year I was a teacher at SciTech STEM Academy and the museum’s
Scout Coordinator.

Q: What is your background?

A: My background is in Early Childhood and Elementary education. I
started off in Early Childhood at the Aurora Family YMCA Childcare
center at the old Aurora Y. After that facility closed I was offered a
position at SciTech’s new STEM Preschool. Overt the 6 years I was at
ScITech STEM Academy, I was a aftercare teacher, music teacher, art
teacher and Preschool Teacher for three-year-old students.
I also am very involved in scouts, both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
During the past four summers I was privileged to be the director for the
Foxfire Cub Scout Day Camp held at Philips Park every summer. I
currently am a leader at Pack 312 out of Freeman School and Troop 26 out
of Holy Angles Church.

Q: What downtown projects have you worked on?

A: In my new position I have been able to be involved in Aurora Museums
After Dark, First Fridays, and am the Chairperson for the Family
Involvement Committee for SPARK.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: Currently I am working on SciTech Summer Camp: Adventures in STEM,
SciTech Nano Camps, Super SciTech Saturdays for 2018, and our 30 year celebrations.

Q: What is your vision for downtown Aurora?

A: My vision for downtown Aurora is to have a place that is a
destination for ALL families to come to and learn, laugh, and play.

Q: Any specific goals for this year?

A: My goal is to help SciTech and the downtown area become all
they can be when it comes to family involvement and education. If we as
a downtown area work together and help each other out anything is

Q: What is your favorite thing about downtown?

A: My favorite thing about DTA is that dynamic of people and culture we
have and of course … our AMAZING museums!

Q: Where can people find you downtown?

A: People can find me at SciTech Hands On Museum (18 W. Benton St.)
pretty much everyday the museum is open.
