Calla Lily Victorian Tea Room owned by Tonya Barkdoll and Myron Schmidt recently had its first anniversary on October 2. The tea room located at 83 S. LaSalle St. is a hidden gem within downtown Aurora. It is loved by locals as a great lunch spot where you can get sandwiches and soup, and also experience fresh loose leaf tea and traditional scones with clotted cream.
The two owners live locally in Aurora and even went to school together, elementary through high school. Barkdoll of Calla Lily Salon & Day Spa located at 1035 S. Lincoln Ave, decided to open up the tea room after she worked in a traditional English tea room. Invest Aurora helped find a building for the Calla Lily Victorian Tea Room back when it opened in 2018 after their previous tea room in Montgomery, Ill. shut down. Schmidt, an organic chemist, worked on the cosmetics line for the Calla Lily Salon and Day Spa, but then became involved with the tea room. Schmidt is also the main server who makes sure customers are having the best experience at Calla Lily Victorian Tea Room.
The tea room has become a favorite spot for people to gather and experience traditional Afternoon and High tea. They pride themselves on serving everything as fresh as possible and try to make everything they can in-house. It is a great place to come for their popular soups, sandwiches, and scones. However, the addition of the Afternoon, Little Princess Tea, and High Tea at reasonable prices, from $15-$25, makes the tea room stand out in Aurora. With all of the specialty teas, you receive a three-tiered plate filled with fresh fruit, scones, dessert, and sandwiches and a pot of the house tea for each person. If you go for the higher level, the High Tea you receive an extra sandwich and soup/salad with it as well. The Little Princess Tea is a reduced price tea service for children 10 and under.
Calla Lily Victorian Tea Room is a great place to come and have a cup of fresh loose leaf tea and dessert in the quaint space. The tea and plate sets along with the decor make sure that the customer has the complete tea room experience.
The tea room also has various other products on sale for its customers. They have a small selection of the Calla Lily Salon and Spa cosmetic line and they also have freshly made jams on sale.
Schmidt is happy with the growth and changes happening in downtown Aurora, and how great the community has become. The tea room recently tried out evening hours but sadly could not keep them. They hope to bring them back in the future when the tea room grows and the owners would also love to bring the Calla Lily Salon and Spa closer to the tea room.
The location of the tea room used to be a grocery store, Pierpont Grocery. The outside of the building has a mural by Rebekah Axtell and Josh Schultz painted this year. Below is an image of the finished project.
